How can I create a cobblestone floorcloth?

  1. Apply two coats of waterbase sealer/primer to the back of the vinyl. Let dry.
  2. Paint primed surface with two coats of off white latex wall paint. Let dry.
  3. Sponge on mortar:
Using damp sponge, sponge entire surface with black and white stencil gel to create mortar. This will give the area an uneven, mottled look. Let dry.
  4. Stencil the stones:
To make the base color, mix equal amounts of russet stencil gel and neutral glazing medium. Apply with roller. Let dry.
  5. Reposition stencil and sponge wet-on-wet tones of berry red, black (very little) shadow gray, taupe, and white stencil gel. Let dry. Other colors from your room can be used here.
  6. Shadow the edges of the rocks and the mortar with a mixture of black stencil gel and glazing medium. Let dry.
  7. Stencil or block print the ivy with village green stencil gel and wild ivy stencil gel. Let dry.
  8. Trim and finish: Using heavy-duty scissors, cut along the edges of the stenciled stones to make an uneven edge. Wipe surface with a tack cloth to remove any dust or lint. Roll on one coat of waterbase urethane varnish, being careful not to overwork the surface with the roller. Do not use oil-based polyurethane. It will discolor and crack on the vinyl surface. Let dry thoroughly.

Apply a second coat of urethane varnish, working the roller in several directions, finishing with the rolling in one direction. Let dry thoroughly. Lightly “sand” the surface with a crumpled piece of brown paper bag. Wipe with a tack cloth. Apply a third coat of urethane varnish. “Sand” again. Wipe again. Apply a fourth coat of urethane varnish. Let cure for 48 hours.
